Lanthanide (Ln) elements are generally found in the oxidation state +II or +III, and a few examples of +IV and +V compounds have also been reported. In contrast, monovalent Ln(+I) complexes remain scarce. Here we combine photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations to study Ln-doped octa-boron clusters (LnB8-, Ln = La, Pr, Tb, Tm, Yb) with the rare +I oxidation state. The global minimum of the LnB8- species changes from Cs to C7v symmetry accompanied by an oxidation-state change from +III to +I from the early to late lanthanides. All the C7v-LnB8- clusters can be viewed as a monovalent Ln(I) coordinated by a η8-B82- doubly aromatic ligand. The B73-, B82-, and B9- series of aromatic boron clusters are analogous to the classical aromatic hydrocarbon molecules, C5H5-, C6H6, and C7H7+, respectively, with similar trends of size and charge state and they are named collectively as "borozenes". Lanthanides with variable oxidation states and magnetic properties may be formed with different borozenes.

We report a study on the electronic structure and chemical bonding of the BiB molecule using high-resolution photoelectron imaging of cryogenically cooled BiB− anion. By eliminating all the vibrational hot bands, we can resolve the complicated detachment transitions due to the open-shell nature of BiB and the strong spin–orbit coupling. The electron affinity of BiB is measured to be 2.010(1) eV. The ground state of BiB− is determined to be 2Π(3/2) with a σ2π3 valence electron configuration, while the ground state of BiB is found to be 3Σ−(0+) with a σ2π2 electron configuration. Eight low-lying spin–orbit excited states [3Σ−(1), 1Δ(2), 1Σ+(0+), 3Π(2), 3Π(1), 1Π(1)], including two forbidden transitions, [3Π(0−) and 3Π(0+)], are observed for BiB as a result of electron detachment from the σ and π orbitals of BiB−. The angular distribution information from the photoelectron imaging is found to be critical to distinguish detachment transitions from the σ or π orbital for the spectral assignment. This study provides a wealth of information about the low-lying electronic states and spin–orbit coupling of BiB, demonstrating the importance of cryogenic cooling for obtaining well-resolved photoelectron spectra for size-selected clusters produced from a laser vaporization cluster source. The discovery of borospherenes unveiled the capacity of boron to form fullerene-like cage structures. While fullerenes are known to entrap metal atoms to form endohedral metallofullerenes, few metal atoms have been observed to be part of the fullerene cages. Here we report the observation of a class of remarkable metallo-borospherenes, where metal atoms are integral parts of the cage surface. We have produced La3B18- and Tb3B18- and probed their structures and bonding using photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Global minimum searches revealed that the most stable structures of Ln3B18- are hollow cages with D3h symmetry. The B18-framework in the Ln3B18- cages can be viewed as consisting of two triangular B6 motifs connected by three B2 units, forming three shared B10 rings which are coordinated to the three Ln atoms on the cage surface. These metallo-borospherenes represent a new class of unusual geometry that has not been observed in chemistry heretofore.

Joint experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the monocyclic B x rings in the inverse sandwiches display similar bonding, consisting of three delocalized σ and three delocalized π bonds. Such monocyclic boron rings do not exist for bare boron clusters, but they are stabilized by the sandwiching lanthanide atoms. An electron counting rule is proposed to predict the sizes of the B x ring that can form stable inverse sandwiches. A unique (d-p)δ bond is found to play important roles in the stability of all three inverse-sandwich complexes.

While boron forms a wide range of metal borides with important industrial applications, there has been relatively little attention devoted to lanthanide boride clusters. Here we report a joint photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical study on two octa-boron di-lanthanide clusters, Ln2B8- (Ln = La, Pr). We found that these clusters form highly stable inverse sandwich structures, [Ln-B8-Ln]-, with strong Ln and B8 bonding via interactions between the Ln 5d orbitals and the delocalized σ and π orbitals on the B8 ring. A (d-p)δ bond, involving the 5dδ and the antibonding π orbital of the B8 ring, is observed to be important in the Ln-B8 interactions. The highly symmetric inverse sandwich structures are overwhelmingly more stable than any other isomers. Upon electron detachment, the (d-p)δ orbitals become half-filled, giving rise to a triplet ground state for neutral La2B8 In addition to the two unpaired electrons in the (d-p)δ orbitals upon electron detachment, the neutral Pr2B8 complex also contains two unpaired 4f electrons on each Pr center. The six unpaired spins in Pr2B8 are ferromagnetically coupled to give rise to a septuplet ground state. The current work suggests that highly magnetic Ln…B8…Ln inverse sandwiches or 1D Ln…B8…Ln nanowires may be designed with novel electronic and magnetic properties.

Polyhedral boranes are a class of well-known boron molecular clusters with unique physical and chemical properties, and great efforts have been made in the past decades to find more effective synthetic methods. However, the established synthetic methods suffer from low efficiency and low selectivity because the mechanism of the B–H bond condensation reaction, critical for the synthesis of the polyhedral boranes, is not well understood. Here we report highly selective and efficient synthetic methods of the salts of the tetradecahydridoundecaborate (1–) (B11H14−) and dodecahydrido-dodecaborates (2–) (B12H122−) anions by employing commercially available and inexpensive starting materials. Both theoretical and experimental investigations are carried out to elucidate the reaction mechanisms. We have found that the nature of the B–H bond condensation is the dihydrogen bonding interaction in which the positively charged hydrogens (bridged hydrogens) play a crucial role. The current study has not only led to more effective and selective synthetic methods for B11H14− and B12H122− but also unveiled the nature of the B–H bond condensation and the general formation mechanisms of polyhedral boranes. This finding will facilitate the development of more effective synthetic methods for polyhedral boranes and spur their wide application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observation of a long-lived triplet excited state and strong electron correlation effects in the copper oxide anion (CuO-) using cryogenic photoelectron imaging In this Note, we report photoelectron imaging of cryogenically cooled CuO SP - sp anion ( SP 1 sp SP + sp ) and the observation of a long-lived triplet electronically excited state ( SP 3 sp ) of CuO SP - sp . The photoelectron spectrum of vibrationally cold CuO SP - sp is obtained at 355 nm along with photoelectron angular distributions, enabling the assignment of the long-lived excited state and revealing the multiconfigurational nature of the ground state of CuO ( SP 2 sp ). We report a photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution photoelectron imaging study of a bimetallic Nb2Au6 - cluster. Theoretical calculations, in conjunction with the experimental data, reveal that Nb2Au6 -/0 possess high-symmetry D 6h structures featuring a Nb-Nb axis coordinated equatorially by an Au6 ring. Chemical bonding analyses show that there are two π bonds and one σ bond in the Nb2 moiety in Nb2©Au6, as well as five totally delocalized σ bonds. The Nb[triple bond, length as m-dash]Nb triple bond is strengthened significantly by the delocalized σ bonds, resulting in an extremely short Nb-Nb bond length comparable to the quintuple bond in gaseous Nb2. The totally delocalized σ bonding in Nb2©Au6 is reminiscent of σ aromaticity, representing a new bonding mode in metal-ligand systems. The unusually short Nb-Nb bond length in Nb2©Au6 shows that the Au6 ring can serve as a bridging ligand to facilitate multiple bonding in transition metal dimers via delocalized σ bonding.

The advent of ion traps as cooling devices has revolutionized ion spectroscopy as it is now possible to efficiently cool ions vibrationally and rotationally to levels where truly high-resolution experiments are now feasible. Here, we report the first results of a new experimental apparatus that couples a cryogenic 3D Paul trap with a laser vaporization cluster source for high-resolution photoelectron imaging of cold cluster anions. We have demonstrated the ability of the new apparatus to efficiently cool BiO− and BiO2− to minimize vibrational hot bands and allow high-resolution photoelectron images to be obtained. The electron affinities of BiO and BiO2 are measured accurately for the first time to be 1.492(1) and 3.281(1) eV, respectively. Vibrational frequencies for the ground states of BiO and BiO2, as well as those for the anions determined from temperature-dependent studies, are reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal-doped boron clusters provide new opportunities to design nanoclusters with interesting structures and bonding. A cobalt-doped boron cluster, CoB18-, has been observed recently to be planar and can be viewed as a motif for metallo-borophenes, whereas the D9d drum isomer as a motif for metallo-boronanotubes is found to be much higher in energy. Hence, whether larger doped boron drums are possible is still an open question. Here we report that for RhB18- the drum and quasi-planar structures become much closer in energy and co-exist experimentally, revealing a competition between the metallo-boronanotube and metallo-borophene structures. Photoelectron spectroscopy of RhB18- shows a complicated spectral pattern, suggesting the presence of two isomers. Quantum chemistry studies indicate that the D9d drum isomer and a quasi-planar isomer (Cs) compete for the global minimum. The enhanced stability of the drum isomer in RhB18- is due to the less contracted Rh 4d orbitals, which can have favorable interactions with the B18 drum motif. Chemical bonding analyses show that the quasi-planar isomer of RhB18- is aromatic with 10 π electrons, whereas the observed RhB18- drum cluster sets a new record for coordination number of eighteen among metal complexes. The current finding shows that the size of the boron drum can be tuned by appropriate metal dopants, suggesting that even larger boron drums with 5d, 6d transition metal, lanthanide or actinide metal atoms are possible.
